Assisted suicide will become legal in California

Physician assisted suicide will become legal in California under a bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. It allows doctors to prescribe medications to end the patient’s life if two doctors agree the patient has 6 or less months to live and is mentally competent. Oregon, Washington, Montana, New Mexico and Vermont already allow assisted suicide, but they aren’t nearly as populated as Califirnia. California is the most populated state in the US so this new law is even more significant and will have an impact on other states.

This law was somewhat inspired by Brittany Maynard who recently left California and traveled to Oregon to take advantage of doctor assisted suicide. Those who oppose the bill think that it will allow patients to be pressured into suicide.
